In 1999, World Marathon Champion Rob de Castella set up SmartStart for Kids! a not-for-profit organisation built to empower schools, parents and children to develop healthy habits and attitudes to address increasing obesity and sedentary lifestyle related illnesses.
In 2004, SmartStart expanded to include the corporate entity SmartStart Australia. Through this SmartStart Your Life! was born - a program aimed at increasing self awareness in adults in regards to their health and well-being.
In 2009, through SmartStart for Kids!, the Indigenous Marathon Project was set up in to contribute to helping indigenous youth and their communities.
